New York Preview: GMC adds Yukon Denali hybrid and Terrain SUVs

General Motors is planning to add another SUV to its hybrid vehicle fleet, in this case wearing the Yukon's top-level Denali trim. There's not much new to report here, as the Yukon Denali Hybrid will feature the same exact drivetrain that's fitted to its siblings from The General, including the non-Denali Yukon. That means we'll see a 6.0-liter Vortec V8 engine with 332 hp and 367 lb-

Tahoe, Yukon and Escalade not being replaced

The full-size SUV's future is on shaky legs and now, reports have surfaced that General Motors has killed the next generation Tahoe and Yukon 'utes, just weeks after announcing it would shutter its SUV plant in Janesville, Wisconsin. Of course, if that pair is buried, the Suburban and the Cadillac Escalade that use the same platform must also come to an end, at least in their curren

GM closing Wisconsin SUV plant early, doors closed by end of year

General Motors has announced that it wil close its SUV plant in Janesville, Wisconsin by the end of this year in response to the woeful market for utility vehicles. The plant produces the GMC Yukon and Chevy Suburban and employs 1,200 UAW workers. GM was originally planning to shutter the plant sometime before 2010, but deteriorating market conditions have expedited the plant's demise. The news comes only one week after the General announced that it would be Chris Shunk

Strike forces GM to suspend truck and SUV orders

General Motors has informed its dealers that production of some of its 2008 full-size trucks and SUVs has been halted due to the ongoing American Axle strike. The affected vehicles include the GMC Yukon, Denali, Sierra heavy-duty regular and extended cab, its commercial-duty pickup and variants of Chevrolet trucks and Tahoes. According to the General, a basic lack of parts is the reason for the stoppage and dealer orders for the week of May 8th and May 15th have been cancelled. While a lack of p

NHTSA investigating GM SUV fires

You might remember a bout of fires consuming a handful of Ford trucks, SUVs and cars that was due to a faulty cruise control switch that could ignite even if the vehicles were parked. General Motors is apparently having a similar issue, and although it doesn't involve the same cruise control system, the potential outcome – a car fire – is the same.

Will the real Tahoe/Yukon Hybrid MSRP please stand up?

Hybrid vehicles still don't make much sense for automakers. The cost of the technology is more than what consumers are willing to pay and in many cases the fuel-saving benefits can be achieved with a simple diesel motor (at least in Europe). Because of this, coming up with the right sticker price can be a major stumbling block. Price it too high and no one will want to buy your hybrid, but discount it too much and money will be lost on every model sold.

GM's hybrid SUV prices will be "corrected" upwards next week

We thought a week or so ago that GM's new hybrid SUVs would start around $45,000. That information came from a GM spokesman, who said the hybrid version would cost about the same price as the conventional 5.3L model with similar equipment. A price like that would have meant virtually no price premium for the hybrid. Following that post, GM's website confirmed the news, and showed the costs of the

GMC launches Yukon Hybrid site

GMC has recently launched a special area on the brand's product website devoted to the upcoming Yukon Hybrid. The Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon SUVs will be launching with the new Two-Mode hybrid system this fall, the first of many applications from GM, DaimlerChrysler and BMW. The site features some basic information about the hybrid system, some photos and a place to sign up for promotional e-mails fro

Caddy considers adding hybrids to the mix

The combination of high gas prices and a sales slowdown at Cadillac have caused the heads of GM's luxury division to consider adding a hybrid to the mix. During an interview with the Detroit News, John Howell, Caddy's head product honcho was quoted as saying that, "Pretty much every program I am looking at going forward has got a hybrid as part of it."
